What each one actually measures

BMI is weight in kilograms divided by height in meters, squared. It doesn't know anything about your body other than those two numbers. It was developed in the 1830s by Adolphe Quetelet, a mathematician studying population averages, not individual health -- see our BMI Calculator.

Body fat percentage estimates what fraction of your total weight is actually fat, as opposed to muscle, bone, and everything else. Where BMI falls short

BMI can't tell muscle from fat -- it only ever sees height and weight. A bodybuilder and a sedentary office worker of the same height and weight get the same BMI, even though one is carrying far more muscle and far less fat than the other. This is why BMI routinely classifies muscular athletes as "overweight" or even "obese," despite having low body fat. It also doesn't adjust for age or sex, even though body composition at the same BMI differs meaningfully between a 25-year-old and a 65-year-old, or between men and women.

Where body fat percentage falls short

The Navy method is a field estimate, not a lab measurement -- it trades some precision for not needing any special equipment. It gets less reliable at the extremes: very lean or very heavy builds tend to see a bigger gap between this estimate and a true lab test (like a DEXA scan) than an average build does. It's also more sensitive to measurement technique than BMI is -- where exactly you place the tape measure, and how snugly, can shift the result more than a small height or weight error would shift a BMI.

So which should you use?

Neither is a medical diagnosis, and neither replaces an actual doctor's visit. In practice: BMI is the fast, free first pass most doctors' offices already use, mainly because it takes ten seconds and no equipment. Body fat percentage is a reasonable next step if BMI seems off for your build -- an athlete, someone older, or anyone whose weight doesn't tell the whole story on its own. Using both together, and treating each as an estimate rather than an answer, gives a fuller picture than either one alone.

Is body fat percentage more accurate than BMI?

They're not really competing at the same job. BMI is a quick screening number for population-level trends; body fat percentage is a more direct estimate of your own body composition. If your goal is understanding your own composition, body fat percentage is the more relevant number -- but it's still an estimate, not a lab result.

Can you have a "normal" BMI but a high body fat percentage?

Yes -- this is sometimes called "normal weight obesity." Someone can land in BMI's "normal" range while still carrying a higher proportion of body fat than that range implies, especially with lower muscle mass. It's exactly the kind of case where BMI alone tells an incomplete story.

Which one should athletes and bodybuilders use?

Body fat percentage. BMI is well known to misclassify muscular people as overweight or obese, since it can't distinguish muscle from fat. Someone with a lot of muscle mass will usually see a much more sensible number from a body fat estimate than from BMI.
